The Midnight Library

One of the things we always used to like is reading - and since high school, we’ve been exchanging books so we both read the same ones. One of the memories from recent years that stays in my mind is when we were already living abroad (and in different countries) and went to an English bookshop in Amsterdam during one of my visits. It was May, the weather was sunny and beautiful, and we were walking around enjoying the city views, fries, and waffles. (By the way, the last two items deserve a separate post later, as they were absolutely delicious 😉).

Shortly before that, another friend of mine described a book she was reading - The Midnight Library by Matt Haig. I remembered it and started describing it while looking at the shelves at the same time.

Then there was that moment when we saw it and both quickly grabbed a copy - curious to know what happens next. I think what made this book so appealing is the story about the impact of the choices we make - because sometimes we can’t really know whether our decisions were right. The main character had many regrets and thought that if she had made different choices, she would be happy. As she gets to live through versions of her life without one or the other of the regrets, she learns that every path has its consequences and that no life is perfect.

It can be very difficult to know whether you made the right choice - or even what “right” actually means. But some decisions are easy and enjoyable to make - like picking up a book and feeling that lovely anticipation of a new and interesting story to read :)
