Story to Read or Story to Watch?

How often do books become really great movies, loved just as much? It seems that most of the time, if the book came first, it is better. I do, however, have one exception in mind - a movie that we both like, and I think we also share the same opinion about the book :) There are also a few other examples like this that I find better, or at least as good as the original story, but today’s post is about Breakfast at Tiffany’s - a great classic movie with Audrey Hepburn.

I remember watching it some years ago at the beginning of spring, and the weather that day felt similar to the opening scene - when Holly is walking in the morning sunlight in New York on her way to Tiffany’s store. That is my favourite scene in the movie - I think because it feels so peaceful and elegant. Audrey looks amazing in the window reflection while having coffee and a croissant, looking at the jewellery. I also love the “Moon River” song scene very much too; it also feels peaceful, when she is playing guitar and singing with her hair wrapped in a towel. I can’t say that I like every scene in the movie, and Holly is, of course, not perfect - although she is definitely charming in her carefree way of living.

But still, I think the way this story is told in the movie is nicer than in the original book, which I read afterwards. And I think, for the most part, Audrey Hepburn made it feel that way.

When I had a chance to visit New York, I made sure to find that street from the opening scene and walk along to the Tiffany’s store - and, of course, tried to take some nice pictures too :) It felt so nice to be in a place I had only seen in the movie before and to feel a bit like a part of the story.

Of course, in the end, it doesn’t have to be about the location itself - but about rediscovering that happy, uplifting feeling you get after watching a really great movie or reading a really great book.

Do you have a book or movie that you like a lot? Let me know in the comments :)
