Driving lesson (Part 1)

Like many of you, we love to travel. There’s something about it that fills life with joy and keeps our minds open to new experiences.

For me, road trips are always fun . That’s why I decided to share a little piece of my journey—one that’s not just about chasing the freedom of the open road, but also about facing my fear of driving.

It all started back in 2019. My brother wanted to get his driver’s license, and he convinced me to join him. We signed up for driving school together, and just like everyone else, had to go through both theory and practical tests.

Learning to drive, though… that wasn’t easy for me. I didn’t enjoy it at first. Every lesson felt like something I just needed to get through—I’d sit behind the wheel, silently praying for it to be over. Honestly, I wasn’t learning because I wanted to, but because I wanted to tick that box ✅.

I had two instructors along the way: one who wasn’t the best fit, and another who was patient, calm, and explained things whenever I needed help. That second one made a real difference.

The theory test took me two tries. Between my dyslexia and not taking it seriously enough, I failed the first attempt. The practical exam, on the other hand, was surprisingly easy—it all took place in a closed-off area with no other drivers around.

Still, even after passing both exams, I didn’t feel confident on the road. Whenever possible, I’d avoid driving altogether. And if I had to get behind the wheel, I only felt safe when someone experienced was sitting next to me, guiding me through every move.

I was avoiding it for so many years and then I I had to move to The Netherlands ...
